Location
The Alpine Research Center is located just east of the village of Finse (1222 m a.s.l.), in the municipality of Ulvik, on the northwestern end of Hardangervidda in southern central Norway (60° 36' N, 7° 30' E).

Mean temperature in January:-10.1 ºC
Mean temperature in July: 7 ºC
Mean annual precipitation: 1500-1800 mm

Biodiversity
Continuous vascular vegetation up to approximately 1300 m a. s. l. Biome: Mainly oligotrophic mountain heaths.

Species Performance

General Research
The Station has a long history of biological and geo-scientific research. In 1969 a climatological station was installed at 1224 m a.s.l. The station has long term series on animals including small mammals and insects. Mass balance data is available from the Hardanger jökullen glacier.

Existing Data Bases

History and Facilities
The Station consists of a research building which contains 14 beds, kitchen, labs and sauna. The station also consists of a conference building which includes 44 beds, kitchen, dinning hall, lecture theatre and sauna.

Transportation
Train from Oslo (approximately 4.5 hrs) or Bergen (approximately 2 hrs). The research station is located approximately 2 km from the train station and depending of season of the year transport to the station is either by truck or by snow mobile.
