Administration
The station and its research forests are run by a permanent staff of about twenty people.

Main facility
The research unit (founded in 1964) in forest Lapland (alt. 148 m). Open whole year round. Accommodation capacity for 15 persons. Breakfast and lunch are served daily at the station. Laboratories have supply of electricity, gas, compressed air and running water, and are equipped with x-ray, dendrocrhonological equipments, refrigerator, ovens, spectrophotometer, micro- and macroscales, microscopes, centrifuges, pH- and conductivity meters, thermometers, etc. Telephone, fax, copy machines and computers with access to email and internet are provided. Bicycles, cars, snowmobiles, boats, etc. are available. Small library contains forestall, zoological, botanical and geographical handbooks.

Research forests

The Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) manages a total of 90,000 hectares of research forest. These include research areas, nature conservation areas and forests assigned for training purposes. Three of them, Kilpisjärvi, Laanila and Kolari, are managed by Kolari Unit. They are all situated in Lapland: Kilpisjärvi in the most northwest end of Finnish Lapland, Laanila in Saariselkä area in the middle-Lapland and Kolari by the river Tornio in western Lapland.

Teuravuoma timber workshop

There is a field site with a timber workshop in Teuravuoma about 10 km from the unit.
